The Night Listener
(USA, 2006, 80 minutes)
A radio personality in a personal crisis is drawn into a long-distance friendship with an ailing teenager who admires him and has written a harrowing memoir of abuse, but begins to suspect that it all may be an elaborate hoax. Intriguing but slight meditation on love and identity, inspired by real events and thinly disguised as a mystery; subdued handling and performances keep it from being substantial enough.
Miramax Films presents a Hart Sharp Entertainment/IFC Productions production, in association with Fortissimo Films and True Film Fund II. Starring Robin Williams, Toni Collette, Bobby Cannavale, Joe Morton, John Cullum; with Rory Culkin; and Sandra Oh. Directed by Patrick Stettner; produced by Robert Kessel, Jeffrey Sharp, John N. Hart Jr and Jill Footlick; screenplay by Armistead Maupin, Terry Anderson and Patrick Stettner, based on the novel The Night Listener by Armistead Maupin; music by Peter Nashel; director of photography, Lisa Rinzler; production designer, Michael Shaw; costume designer, Marina Draghici; film editor, Andy Keir.
