Goya's Ghosts

(Spain, 2006, 113 minutes)

At the end of the 18th century, Spanish royal artist Francisco de Goya witnesses as the destinies of his teenage muse and an opportunist priest intertwine in tragic ways. Cloying, heavy-handed mix of period epic and prestige melodrama bereft of any panache, where only the generally solid acting, some satirical jabs and a couple of bravura scenes remind us of its director’s earlier glories.
