A tax inspector carrying a dark secret becomes a guardian angel to a group of Los Angelenos down in their luck and falls in love with one of them, a young woman suffering from a congenital heart condition. Three-handkerchief star weepie with a rather convoluted plot, reuniting the star and director of The Pursuit of Happyness; it works thanks to the smart, exquisite handling.
