Jeder für sich und Gott gegen alle

The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser

(West Germany, 1974, 109 minutes)

A young man unable to speak and write is found in a Bayern square in 1828 and turns out to be a disowned orphan who grew up locked in a cellar. Melancholy, impressionist melodrama of social mores that is presented almost as if it were a documentary; quieter and more subdued than most of its director's work, but no less powerful.

A Filmverlag der Autoren release of a Werner Herzog Filmproduktion production, in co-production with ZDF. Starring Bruno S., Walter Ladengast, Brigitte Mora. Directed and written by Werner Herzog; director of photography (colour), Jörg Schmidt-Reitwein; art director, Henning von Gierke; costume designers, Gisela Storch, Ann Poppel; film editor, Beate Mainka-Jellinghaus.
