Séraphine

(France/Belgium, 2008, 126 minutes)

The true story of Séraphine Louis, a slow-witted but gifted painter from early 20th century rural France who survived as a housemaid and was discovered by German art critic Wilhelm Uhde. Quiet, austere biopic that struck a chord with French audiences but, despite the strong performances, fails to ellicit the rapture it seeks.
