Indochine

(France, 1991, 155 minutes)

A wealthy French plantation owner in 1920s colonial Indochina has a torrid affair with an impetuous young Navy officer, only to find her adopted daughter falling in love with him as well. Lush but stilted melodrama that tries too hard to have its cake and eat it too, switching awkwardly between doom-laden colonial romance and political primer on the path to the independence of Vietnam, but nevertheless likely to please fans of the genre.
