Cendres et sang

(France/Romania/Portugal, 2009, 99 minutes)

A widower and her three grown-up children return to her native country for a family wedding and find themselves embroiled in the blood feud that drove her away in the first place. Muddled melodrama that aims for operatic tragedy but, despite seductive visuals and a couple of good performances, has neither the chops nor the ideas to pull it through successfully.

Muddled is a perfect description of this movie! First of all I couldn't figure out what country they were in - thought Romania because of the gypsy music and bull-headed chauvinistic men, but then thought it could be Lebanon, Greece, Turkey or some other place. Characters were not distinguishable from one another, and reason for blood feud wasn't quite as clear as it might have been - not on my top 25 list of French flics!!
Flickophile francaise!
