The Milk of Sorrow

98 minutes

A Peruvian teenager, born during the country's civil war and terrified of any male contact, accepts to work as a housemaid to earn enough money to bury her mother in their native village. Spare, oblique coming-of-age melodrama, with the handling and writing smartly integrating both documentary and poetical textures into what could otherwise be misconstrued as neo-realism or satire.
